A pass-through barrier washer has separate loading and unloading sides. That arrangement allows the machine to sit within a room layout that separates soiled and clean work. It is a physical equipment feature, not a complete hygiene specification.
If your project involves a care setting, specialist textile process or controlled environment, begin with the people responsible for the process requirements. Agree what must be controlled and evidenced before selecting equipment or assuming that a catalogue label establishes compliance.
Draw the textile route first
Map how textiles arrive, how they are sorted, where they enter the washer and where they go after unloading. Include trolleys, staff movement, doors, storage and the route to subsequent drying or finishing. A clear drawing makes it easier to identify where the proposed separation needs to be maintained.
Also mark the maintenance route. The equipment needs appropriate service access without treating that access as an afterthought. Ask how the machine interfaces with the proposed partition and what manufacturer installation details are required for that exact model.
Distinguish the machine from the process
The washer, wash programme, textile handling, staff procedures and any validation requirements are separate parts of the brief. Buying a barrier machine does not by itself establish textile sterility, eliminate every route of recontamination or certify the room.
Record who will specify the process, who will commission the equipment and who is responsible for any required validation or continuing checks. A written division of responsibilities helps a quotation describe what is included and what needs separate assessment.
Compare the exact family and configuration
Domus offers ASM, DHB and ASA barrier machine families. Their capacities, controls and options should be checked against the current model documentation. Do not transfer a feature from one family to another simply because both are described as barrier washers.
Manufacturer material distinguishes the control and clean-side display arrangements across the ranges. This is a useful example of why a written model specification matters: the operator experience and information available on each side can depend on the chosen machine and options.
Use the barrier washer collection to identify candidate models, then read their linked technical sheets. Treat paired capacity ratings according to their stated fill ratios rather than selecting whichever number is largest.
Keep specialist options model-specific
Domus describes configurable cleanroom options, including particular material treatments and filtration arrangements on relevant equipment. An option described in a specialist range is not evidence that every catalogue machine includes it as standard.
Ask for the requested materials, filtration, sensors, control functions and documentation to be recorded against the exact proposed configuration. Avoid a broad description such as “cleanroom ready” when it leaves those requirements undefined.
Prepare the site information
Bring room and access dimensions, partition details if available, utilities, drainage arrangements and the required operating window. Identify the textile mix and both normal and peak workload. Tell ILS which information is confirmed and which needs to be checked.
Equipment dimensions are useful for an initial layout, but operating space, connections and service clearances still need the manufacturer’s installation information. A supplier’s model comparison cannot replace the responsible specialist’s assessment of your site and process.
Your barrier laundry enquiry checklist
- The textiles and the reason a separated loading/unloading process is required.
- A sketch of soiled and clean routes, staff movement and storage.
- Normal and peak workload, programmes and operating window.
- Exact candidate models and requested specialist options.
- Room, partition, access and utility information.
- Commissioning, process-assessment and validation responsibilities.
- The documents or records required as part of the agreed supply.

Discuss your process requirements with ILS. The next step is a model-specific equipment conversation with the relevant site requirements clearly recorded.
