A hotel can have enough washing capacity and still struggle to put clean linen back into bedrooms. Towels may be waiting for a dryer, sheets may be waiting for finishing, or the laundry team may have too little time between collection and the next changeover. Buying a larger washer addresses only one of those constraints.
Before comparing equipment, record a normal working day and a genuinely busy one. The aim is a brief that describes what must be ready, when it must be ready and how the room actually works.
Separate the textile streams
List bed linen, towels, table linen, uniforms and any other work processed on site. Record dry textile weight where it can be measured, along with the number of batches and the required finish. A combined total can hide an important difference: towels and flat linen do not necessarily follow the same route after washing.
Also record what is outsourced. If you intend to bring work in-house, use the real collection schedule and quantities from that work. Avoid an estimate based only on bedroom count; occupancy, changeover policy, textile weights and restaurant activity can change the requirement.
Describe the peak, not just the weekly average
Write down the busiest collection period, the delivery deadline and the hours when staff can operate the laundry. Include loading, unloading, transfers, sorting and breaks. A machine programme time is only part of the elapsed time between a soiled collection and a finished linen delivery.
For each stream, ask what happens if it arrives late or one machine is unavailable. This does not automatically justify an additional machine, but it makes resilience a discussion based on your operation rather than a vague wish for spare capacity.
Match washing to drying and finishing
Follow each textile stream across the room: collection, sorting, washing, drying or moisture preparation, finishing, folding and storage. Mark where work waits. The manufacturer’s hotel guidance includes washing, drying and flatwork finishing as distinct equipment decisions.
Record the finished result you require. If flatwork is to be ironed, agree the textile preparation and moisture requirements for the selected ironer. If towels are taking too long to dry, discuss the washer’s extraction performance and the dryer’s actual configuration together. Neither a larger dryer nor a higher spin figure establishes the result for your textiles on its own.
Compare model ratings on the same basis
A capacity printed in a model title is a useful navigation aid. It is not an hourly production promise. Some manufacturer sheets give more than one kilogram rating because the fill ratio differs. Read the rating basis, drum volume and relevant programme information before treating two capacities as equivalent.
Use the technical document centre to find the exact sheet. Keep the model and heating configuration alongside every figure in your comparison. If a value cannot be confirmed, leave it as a question for the specification.
Check the room and the access route
Measure the available footprint, doorways and route into the room. Consider operating space, linen movement, utility connections, drainage and access for maintenance. Machine dimensions alone do not describe the full space required for installation and use.
A room plan is helpful even before it is a formal drawing. Label the existing equipment and where clean linen is stored. Include any restrictions on delivery times or access through occupied areas, so these can be discussed before the quotation.
Your hotel laundry enquiry checklist
- Normal and peak dry textile quantities, separated by linen type.
- The time each stream must be ready and the operating hours available.
- Existing make, model and the point where work currently waits.
- Required finish, outsourcing changes and storage arrangements.
- Room and access measurements, with utility details where known.
- Installation constraints and any planned change in the hotel’s operation.
Explore commercial washers, dryers and finishing equipment as parts of the same working process. Read the washer buying and site-planning guide when you are ready to examine individual models.
